It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Terrence James Board, affectionately known as ‘Terry’ and ‘TJ’, on Saturday 23 November 2019. Aged 74 years and following a recent battle with cancer, Terry passed away peacefully at his home in Warrnambool surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Down to earth, Terry liked to call a spade a spade, and was highly respected as a genuine all-round good bloke with a true heart of gold.
Commencing his career in Victoria’s Western District, Terry was one of the first to identify a gap in the commercial property market’s hotel sector. Quickly finding his niche, Terry decided this wasn’t a bad way to earn a quid and went on to focus almost exclusively on pubs. One of his first sales was the Lady Bay Hotel in Warrnambool in the mid-70s.
In 1979 Terry saw the need for a specialist brokerage company to service the needs of the hospitality industry. He was ultimately joined by sons Peter and Terry Junior, and institutional industry brokers T J Board and Sons Pty Ltd was born. Together, they ensured the industry began to receive the service it required, becoming leaders in the hospitality field.
To successfully strengthen respective business offerings, and having already worked in conjunction on several successful campaigns, Burgess Rawson Melbourne was pleased to team up with T J Board in September 2013. Recognising the strengths and areas of expertise complementary to each firm, Terry was appointed Manager, Hotels. It proved to be a colourful and rewarding relationship, with Terry passing on not only a breadth and depth of industry and business knowledge, but also valuable life learnings to the growing team of young Directors.
One of a kind and a bit of a character himself, Terry had the opportunity to meet hundreds of industry personalities throughout his career. He literally worked on thousands of transactions with some of the largest operators in the business; to this day there would not be a hotelier who hasn’t heard of T J Board.
Our condolences and thoughts are with Terry’s sons Terry, Peter and Michael, his daughter-in-law Michelle, and grandchildren Eliza, Lana and Paddy.
The Funeral Liturgy for Terry will be held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Lava Street, Warrnambool on Friday 29 November, commencing at 2.00pm. A wake will follow at one of his favourite hotels ‘The Cally’, located in the heart of his home town, Warrnambool.
Quite the character within the real estate and hotel industry, and a great mate, Terry will be missed far and wide. We bid him a sad farewell, and will miss his contribution to the Burgess Rawson family. We are sure he would want us all to have a little sip for him in fond remembrance.
